Craft Beer Equipment Overview
Although there is plenty of room for variation, most draft beer systems consist of the following elements:
- CO2 (or nitrogen) tank
- Gas regulator
- Air line
- Keg coupler
- Beer line
- Draft beer tower
- Faucet and tap handle
CO2 (or nitrogen, if you’re dispensing Guinness) is required to help push the beer out of the keg and also to maintain the proper carbonation levels of your draft beer.
Gas regulator is connected directly to the CO2 tank - it brings the gas pressure down to workable levels (usually between 10 and 15 PSI). Air line connects the regulator to the keg coupler - it is essentially a food-grade PVC tube.
The keg coupler is attached to the keg valve and takes in CO2 to push air through the keg and beer through the beer line. Beer line, much like air line, is a PVC food-grade tube - in a typical draft beer dispensing system, it screws onto the top of the coupler and connects to the shank or draft beer tower.
Shank is a threaded metal tube that runs either through your refrigerator or the top of your draft tower. One line features a female thread for the beer line, and the other is a male thread for the faucet.
